The Chicago Cubs are gearing up for what they hope is a lengthy playoff run. If all goes to plan, Edward Cabrera would be operating in a pivotal role out of the bullpen.
Cabrera is still making his way back from a middle finger blister. The Cubs have already committed to moving him to the pen upon his return. In that spot, Brent Maguire of MLB.com argues Cabrera could make his biggest impact.
“It’s been a tough first year in Chicago for Cabrera, who has been on the IL since Aug. 17 due to a finger blister and had a 5.68 ERA in his first 15 starts with the Cubs,” Maguire wrote. “Cabrera is already gearing up for a return with multiple rehab appearances and the plan is for him to shift to the bullpen when he’s back. That transition is why Cabrera is on this list despite his struggles — the right-hander has solely operated as a starter in the Majors but his high-octane stuff could make him a real threat in the playoffs.”
The Cubs’ biggest priority is getting Cabrera back on the field. Seeing as he is dealing with a blister, that shouldn’t take too long. Upon that return, Chicago will look for his role change to spark greater success in 2026.

The Cubs acquired Cabrera in a trade with the Miami Marlins prior to the season. However, his debut hasn’t gone as planned. Over his first 15 starts with the franchise, the right-hander holds a 5.68 ERA and a 67/32 K/BB ratio.
Still, the Cubs traded for him for a reason. He held a 3.53 ERA and a 150/48 K/BB ratio in his last 26 starts with the Marlins. Cabrera’s entire six-year MLB career has resulted in a 4.31 ERA and a 545/248 K/BB ratio.
Chicago knows the righty brings value to their roster when he is at the top of his game. Perhaps coming out of the bullpen will be what Cabrera needs to get back on track.
