Tyrique Stevenson firmly plants flag in Chicago Bears defense

Entering his contract season, Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson had plenty to prove over the offseason. Throughout training camp, he passed all the tests.

Now, Stevenson is poised to enter 2026 as the Bears CB2 once again. It’s a role Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune thinks he earned and won’t give up easily.

“I don’t believe so. Stevenson had a pretty solid training camp,” Biggs wrote. “He was around the ball. Maybe I’m mistaken, but Phillips, in my opinion, was an add-on to the Gervon Dexter Sr. trade for the Bears to get some depth at cornerback in a guy who runs pretty well.”

“Stevenson’s physical profile really fits what the Bears are looking for at the position,” he continued. “Consistency always has been the question mark for him. From one week to the next. From one day to the next. Sometimes from one snap to the next. He’s in a contract year, so he should be locked in.”

Stevenson must stay consist throughout the 2026 season to retain his starting role. But at least entering the year, the Bears seem confident in what the cornerback brings to the table.

Over his three years with the Bears, Stevenson has put up 213 tackles, 38 passes defended and seven interceptions. He has double digit pass break ups all three years and has shown flashes of brilliance throughout.

Of course, there have been some negatives too, most infamously on his non-play against the Washington Commanders in the Hail Mary loss. But the cornerback has put it behind him and has gotten into the good graces of the coaching staff. He must now back up his strong training camp with production during the regular season.
