Bears’ Ben Johnson sends warning shot to all defensive coordinators

Head coach Ben Johnson is trying to ensure the Chicago Bears have one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. His expectations have been made clear to quarterback Caleb Williams and company.

Johnson’s debut in Chicago led to immediate offensive success, as the Bears ranked sixth in total offense, averaging 369.2 yards per game. Williams got closer to his No. 1 pick ceiling while the Bears jumped to third in rushing, averaging 144.5 yards per game.

Now in 2026, Chicago is looking to prove they can be consistent. Their run to the NFC North title came from numerous comeback victories. If the Bears can utilize their explosive offensive to their advantage and hold a lead into the fourth quarter, perhaps their playoff standing won’t be as precarious.

Johnson has his plan in place and has been meticulous in crafting the roster. He has high expectations for any member of Chicago’s offense.

The Bears ranked ninth in points per game in 2025, averaging 25.9. If Johnson’s plans come to fruition, Chicago should sky rocket up those rankings, via the head coach’s Tuesday press conference.

“It’s the responsibility of the offense to score every time we touch the grass,” Johnson said. “Of course there’s complimentary football, we’d love to get a lead and protect a lead. If we don’t play that way, we got to find a way to come back from behind. We’ll find out a lot about this team. We won’t know Week 1 who we are yet. This first month is going to be about figuring out who this 2026 team is and where we need to compliment each other. I’m really proud of how these guys ended camp. We put ourselves in a position to play well early in the season.”

Through the early part of the season, Chicago will know where they stand as a roster. Much has been made about the team’s holes on offense. But at the same time, those gashes could be patched with a truly dominant offense.

A plan is one thing, actually acting on it is another. Johnson will be paying close attention to how Williams and the offense operate in Week 1 and moving forward.
