Why Bears’ Caleb Williams still gives Ben Johnson goosebumps

One of the biggest reasons head coach Ben Johnson took the Chicago Bears job was the presence of Caleb Williams. He needed a quarterback capable of running his scheme. So far, that belief from Johnson has paid off.

There is still work to be done though. Being a former No. 1 overall pick, the expectations on Williams’ shoulders were always going to be lofty. But the Bears wouldn’t have selected him, and in turn Johnson choosing him, if they didn’t believe he could be one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Throughout the 2026 season, Williams will look to improve his consistently. With seven fourth quarterback comebacks, he proved he has the clutch gene in full. But entering that fourth quarter with a lead consistently would show the quarterback is fully absorbing Johnson’s offense.

The head coach sees the vision when Williams is a finish project. Chicago’s journey to that point keeps Johnson engaged.

Johnson came to Chicago with plenty of goals, from winning Super Bowls to orchestrating a dominant offense. But to do that, he needs Williams. The head coach is excited about his future and over the moon about what that potential could hold, via Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times.

“I get excited about what this team can become because you’ll see Caleb take the next step,” Johnson said. “I get goosebumps thinking how far he can go as he masters what we’re asking him to do.”

Williams next steps will be twofold. Chicago wants him to continue making big plays, but in a controlled manner that won’t put the Bears in a place to rely on them. Furthermore, the franchise will want to see him improve his 58.1 completion percentage, which will only have the ball moving down the field more consistently.

Johnson believes Williams can be a truly special quarterback in this league. He is ready to continue playing a role in getting him there.
