Bears’ Caleb Williams better than all NFL quarterbacks combined in 1 key stat

Quarterback Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears opened their 2026 season with a bang, earning a 59-37 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Williams contributed four total touchdowns in the win.

Two of them came on the ground, from nine yards and then 29 yards out respectively. The Bears rushed for 291 yards total with 65 of them coming from their quarterback. Williams’ work in the ground game will only make him trickier to stop.

The quarterback is already know for his elusiveness on drop backs. But when it’s time to kick it in another gear, Williams has proven he isn’t afraid to put pedal to the floor.

Against the Panthers specifically, the quarterback continued a trend that puts him over every other pass thrower in the NFL.

On both of his touchdown runs, Williams broke 20 MPH. That marked the seventh time he has broken the 20 MPH mark since the start of 2025, more than every quarterback in the NFL combined, via Ben Solak of ESPN.

“That’s some legitimate acceleration — special stuff,” Solak wrote. “Williams has cleared 20 mph seven times as a ball carrier since the start of last season. The rest of the quarterbacks in the NFL have six such plays combined.”

The analyst was particularly impressed with Williams’ first touchdown. After being flushed out of the pockets, the quarterback is easily able to breeze by any remaining defenders.

“His fastest touchdown (20.8 mph) was a 29-yard scamper at the end of the first half, but it’s easier to see the impact of his extra gear on his first touchdown (20.45 mph),” Solak wrote. “Williams is as dangerous as anyone in the league when throwing on the run (and especially to his left), so he initially runs only fast enough to outstrip pursuing Panthers defensive end Princely Umanmielen.”

“Once he realizes he can make the pylon, he rounds the corner and hits the gas,” he concluded. “It looks as easy for him as it does for quarterbacks Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.”

Caleb Williams reached a top speed of 20.35 mph on his 9-yard scramble TD run, the third-fastest speed by a QB as a ball carrier since the start of last season (Williams also owns the top two speeds).

With Williams speed, he is going to be difficult to bring down consistently. If he is able to find the edge, it may be off to the races.
