Chicago Bears send Carolina Panthers to new franchise lows after Week 1

The Carolina Panthers put up a fight, but ultimately, the Chicago Bears came out on top 59-27 in their Week 1 matchup. For the Panthers, it was one of their darker days on the defensive side.

Carolina made numerous additions throughout the offseason like Devin Lloyd, Jaelan Phillips and Bobby Okereke. All three made an impact in the Week 1 matchup. In the end though, it’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room that is 59 points allowed.

Carolina will watch the tape and try to regroup heading into Week 2. But their loss to the Bears will remain a dark cloud over the organization.

The 59 points allowed are the most in franchise history, beating out Carolina’s previous high of 52, via Brayden Stamps of Fox 8. Furthermore, the 291 rushing yards are the most any team has let up in Week 1, via StatMuse.

“The 59 points that Carolina allowed were the most points the team has ever allowed in a game in franchise history, breaking the previous record of 52 points,” Stamps wrote. “The 291 yards of rushing the Bears gained on the Panthers are the most a defense has ever allowed in a Week 1 game in NFL history, according to Statmuse. Breaking the previous record of 278 yards set by the Dallas Cowboys in 1978 against the Baltimore Colts.”

The Bears’ ground game led them to victory, scoring a record-trying six times on the ground. That will be a key aspect of their scheme the Panthers will try to clean up moving forward.

As for the Bears, they will continue riding the potent duo of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai. Quarterback Caleb Williams has proven he isn’t afraid to take off either. For any team preparing to face Chicago, they must at the very least know how to handle their rushing attack. The Bears may not score 59 points every game. But the franchise is at least going to try.
