Cubs’ Matthew Boyd desperately fighting for postseason home-field advantage

As the final stretch of the regular season plays out, the Chicago Cubs know exactly where they stand. They’re looking to earn the top Wild Card spot, guaranteeing home-field advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs.

With a 10-game lead, the Milwaukee Brewers have essentially locked up another NL Central crown. But holding an 83-67 record, the Cubs sit in the top spot in the Wild Card race. While they share a record with the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago holds the tiebreaker.

That remains true against the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks, who occupy the two spots below the Phillies, as well. Essentially, the Cubs can control their destiny to the top Wild Card spot. But they know it won’t be easy.

For starting pitcher Matt Boyd, earning home-field advantage is a near must. He knows the benefits the Cubs get playing in front of their own fans at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs have nearly identical records home and away in 2026, with only three more wins at Wrigley Field. But come playoff time, Boyd understands the atmosphere in the air. He wants to hear the roar of the Chicago crowd when it matters most, via Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

“Every time that you get to play at Wrigley, it’s a huge advantage,” Boyd said. “We have amazing fans. It’s an amazing atmosphere any day, but in the playoffs, it was an amazing opportunity that we had. The atmosphere, it was so fun to play in front of. Any baseball that we get to have here, it matters, in a good way. We want to have it.”

“It’s our job to play our best baseball,” he continued, “attack every facet of it, all aspects of our game. The opponent doesn’t matter. It’s the big leagues. Everybody’s good. You focus on you. Really, it’s a time to double down on that.”

While has been limited by injuries in 2026, the Cubs know Boyd is still a crucial contributor out of the rotation. In turn, the left-hander plans to do everything in his power to help Chicago reach new heights.
