Dennis Allen sends blunt message to Chicago Bears cornerbacks before Vikings clash

While the Minnesota Vikings quarterback situation is in question, no one is doubting what their wide receivers bring to the table. The Chicago Bears must be prepared to put forth a much stronger effort than they did against the Carolina Panthers.

In Week 1, the Bears allowed 353 net passing yards and three touchdowns. The fact they scored 59 themselves negated the outburst. But Chicago can’t consistently allow that type of yardage through the air and expect to win.

Even if the situation was more favorable, facing off against Justin Jefferson is a tall task as is. Chicago can’t afford to allow him or any pass catcher take over the game.

Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson are trusted as the Bears’ starting cornerbacks. But they’ve now been put on notice entering Week 2.

Ultimately, any defensive struggles fall back onto coordinator Dennis Allen. Which is why he is urging Johnson and Stevenson to step up, acknowledging how crucial their play is for success, via Nicholas Moreano of Bears Roundtable.

“Yeah, I mean, line up again,” Allen said. “Let’s go. Week 2, you know what I mean? Like, we have to be man enough to admit and see where we fell short, all right? What can we do to improve our performance? What can we do to maybe improve our preparation, those types of things? And then let’s focus on playing outstanding this week, because that one’s done. Let’s move on to this one and let’s play better as a group.”

How the secondary and defense overall bounces back in Week 2 will be one of the Bears’ biggest storylines in Week 2. If they can’t, there will only being more questions about where the unit currently stands. Allen has now made it clear to Chicago’s cornerback tandem what his expectations are. It’s up to the Bears as a team to follow through.
