Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams (18) hands off to running back D'Andre Swift

Chicago Bears running back D’Andre Swift is having quite the start to his 2026 season. First, he signed a new three-year contract with the franchise. Then, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after running for 124 yards and three touchdowns against the Carolina Panthers.

After seeing that performance, the Bears have to be even more excited to have Swift long-term. They didn’t necessarily have to break the bank either, paying him $33.75 million over the three years.

As long as head coach Ben Johnson is calling plays, the run game will remain a crucial aspect of how Chicago wants to succeed on offense. And if Swift keeps running like how he did in Week, he’ll be a focal point of that rushing attack for the foreseeable future.

But now that Swift’s contract details have been revealed, it’s clear the Bears landed the running back on a much more team-friendly deal than expected.

There is no guaranteed money in Swift’s deal beyond the 2027 season, via Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap. His dead cap, should the running back not be on the team, is just $4 million in 2028 and $2 million in 2029.

What that means is that after 2027, the Bears wouldn’t face many financial penalties should they move on from Swift. Chicago is expecting him to continue developing under Johnson. But should he struggle as the years go on, the franchise won’t be tied down to him.

Seeing Swift take such a team friendly deal, he must be enjoying his time with the Bears. He is playing a featured role in an offense that just dropped 59. The fact Chicago offered the extension in the first place shows how they feel about him. But the Bears will have an extra trick up their sleeve should things run sour.
