White Sox long overdue Luis Castillo move par for underwhelming trade deadline haul

The Chicago White Sox were quite active at this year’s trade deadline, adding reinforcements in several key areas. In the bullpen they brought in Huascar Brazoban, Luis Castillo was added to the starting rotation, Joey Bart at catcher, and Brenton Doyle in the outfield.

Unfortunately, none of those moves have panned out. Brazoban owns a 6.30 ERA over 10 outings, Castillo has only provided one quality start, Bart sustained a fracture in his hand briefly into his tenure, and Doyle hasn’t moved the needle much since coming to Chicago, owning a .246 batting average over 34 games, but is yet to draw a free pass over 70 plate appearances.

With that context, the White Sox’s 2026 trade deadline haul has been underwhelming overall. Adding to that disappointment, Chicago has officially moved Castillo to the bullpen amid his struggles.

Luis Castillo will operate out of the Chicago White Sox bullpen going forward

On Thursday, September 17, White Sox manager Will Venable announced that Castillo’s next outing will come out of the bullpen. His most recent appearance, on September 12, technically came in relief as well, with Sean Newcomb serving as the opener and working 1.1 innings before handing the ball to Castillo. Castillo then allowed three earned runs over 2.2 innings.

Since joining the White Sox, Castillo has pitched to a 7.76 ERA over 29.0 innings. He has just one quality start where he threw seven shutout innings, but otherwise he hasn’t allowed less  than three earned runs in an appearance. Rookie David Sandlin will replace Castillo in the rotation. Right now, this move gives Chicago its best chance to keep games within reach.
