Chicago Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon has been a crucial contributor on defense when healthy. However, that hasn’t been the case for quite some time now. The nickel back is currently on injured reserve with a lingering calf injury.
When Gordon returns seems to still be a mystery. He has been working out away from the organization, trying to get his body right for football activity again. But whether or not Gordon is activated off IR when first eligible is yet to be seen.
In his absence, the Bears are relying on playing like Malik Muhammad and Cam Lewis in the slot. Both have serious potential and have shown flashes of brilliance. But the franchise still allowed the Carolina Panthers to throw for 353 net yards and three touchdowns in Week 1.
If Gordon is healthy and playing at his usual level, the Bears defensive would gain a boost. But Chicago doesn’t know if/when that’ll actually happen.

Despite Gordon being away from the team, it hasn’t affected how his teammates think of him. The Bears are patiently waiting for Gordon to return and eager for the cornerback to be a defensive staple again, via Herb Howard of 104. The Score.
“There is not a single person in that locker room 1) who doesn’t love Kyler Gordon as a teammate and 2) who does not think he’s coming back to play football for this team,” Howard said. “They talk about ‘when he comes back.’”
Unprompted, several Bears players have brought up Kyler Gordon and his impact on the team to @HerbHoward411.

The Bears are the only NFL organization Gordon has known. While his recent injury history may put a dark cloud over his name, Chicago considered him so highly they made him the highest-paid slot cornerback in 2025. He has a clear place in how the defense is currently constructed.
Gordon will need to get fully past has calf or any injury bothering him. But his teammates remain optimistic about the situation.
