Why 37 is Chicago Bears’ magic number against Minnesota Vikings

The Chicago Bears are solely focused on coming away with a win in their Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. But if they score at least 37 points, the 2026 team will etch their name into NFL history forever.
The Bears’ effort to hold the best offense in the league started with a bang in Week 1, as they scored 59 points against the Carolina Panthers. Because of that, expectations will only rise for quarterback Caleb Williams and company. And while they won’t score 59 every game, Chicago will need to put points on the board often to keep up based on the state of their defense.
Facing off against Minnesota, that won’t be the easiest of tasks. The last time the Vikings gave up 37 points was in Week 8 of the 2025 season against the Los Angeles Chargers. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores is prepared to battle the Bears.
But Ben Johnson is firm in his goals as well. He wants as many points as Chicago can muster. Another offensive outburst would only give the franchise more accolades.
Chicago Bears approaching NFL history
If the Bears score 37 points, they’ll have the highest total in NFL history through the first two weeks of a season, via ESPN research. Fans haven’t seen an offensive explosion like that in decades.
“The Bears need 37 points to break the NFL record for most points in a team’s opening two games, currently held by the 1968 Raiders (95),” ESPN’s stat read.
In 2025, Chicago scored 37 or more points twice, against the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers. Because of that, the record-breaking number may seem far fetched.
But in Week 1, the Bears showed they’re serious about competing. Maybe the 50 burgers aren’t sustainable, but Chicago isn’t expecting their offense to fall off a cliff. If all goes right under Johnson, the idea of the Bears scoring 30+ a game wouldn’t be a question.
With earning a playoff spot in mind, Chicago will do whatever it takes to win. But if the scoreboard starts lighting up again, so will the record books.
