Chicago Bears teammate taking heat after Caleb Williams’ injury

The Chicago Bears will have to wait until Monday before they know how long Caleb Williams will be out after the third-year quarterback suffered a hamstring injury.

Depending on the severity of the injury, he could be out for multiple weeks to the rest of the season.

One of Williams’ teammates is taking heat from the Bears fan base after his poor play against the Minnesota Vikings. Rookie tight end Sam Roush dropped a critical pass from Williams before the sequence that led to the quarterback’s injury.

If Roush had kept hold of the pass, he would have likely finished the play with a touchdown reception, and the Bears would have taken a lead on the Vikings. Instead, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent can step in for Williams.

The Bears settled for a field goal on the drive, and Roush missed a block that allowed Minnesota to block a field goal attempt that would have made it 6-6 if good. Roush, a third-round pick by the Bears in April, finished the game with one reception for nine yards on three targets. He had more drops than catches in the Bears’ 9-3 loss on Sunday.

Fans called out Roush for his poor play on Sunday, and dropping the catch that could have avoided Williams’ injury.

“It may not be fair, but a lot of people are going to view rookie TE Sam Roush as public enemy No. 1 in Chicago for a while,” wrote a fan. “If he makes a catch right on his chest, the Bears have the lead. If he makes the catch, Caleb Williams doesn’t go down with a major injury.”

“Sam Roush simply can’t be out TE3 right now. He’s unbelievably useless right now,” posted another.

“Sam Roush beat here. One of the worst individual performances from a Bears player in recent memory,” argued a fan.

It was a confusing pick for the Bears to add a TE3 in the third round when the defense needed depth for the defensive line and secondary. Roush’s play on Sunday didn’t make that pick look any better.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson’s use of his tight ends was even more curious on Sunday. Cole Kmet finished with just one target and no receptions. Colston Loveland finished with three targets and one reception for three yards. He was blocking on the final play of the game, which ended in an incompletion.
