The Chicago Bears are going into halftime against the Minnesota Vikings trailing just 6-3. However, their play on the field told a much different story. A week after scoring 59 points against the Carolina Panthers, the Bears didn’t break 100 yards in the first half.
One of the biggest problems facing Chicago has been their penalties. They have been called for seven overall, losing 53 yards. Penalties were what stalled out what looked to be a promising drive for the Bears.
Quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense drove the ball to Minnesota’s 30-yard line. An in illegal shift negated what would’ve been a 16-yard gain. Then, Chicago was called for holding before Williams was flagged for intentional grounding. With a false start two plays later followed by an incompletion, the Bears were forced to punt. Trailing by three and already in field goal range, that’s not points head coach Ben Johnson wanted to give up, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
“Four penalties in a five-snap span there for the Bears offense,” Biggs wrote. “Not ideal.”
Johnson has already proven he is willing to make changes, benching left tackle Braxton Jones in favor of Theo Benedet. If the Bears’ continue struggling, and penalties continue being called, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Johnson make more changes.
Garrett Bradbury struggled in that first half with penalties, committing a holding call as well as a false start penalty. Chicago couldn’t really string together much for their offense and it likely didn’t make Ben Johnson happy at halftime.
