Chicago White Sox starter explains early exit from win over Tigers

The Chicago White Sox clinched their four-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday with an 8-1 victory. They’re now one step closer to officially punching their playoff ticket.

With a 6-0 lead by the fifth inning, Chicago was able to cruise to victory. But the win was made a bit more bitter sweet after seeing starter Davis Martin take an early exit. He was removed from the game after 4.1 innings and 70 pitches.

The right-hander had allowed three hits, two walks and no runs over his shortened outing. Furthermore, he flashes his potential with six strikeouts. Overall, Martin was well on his way to earning a quality start and win.

Now the White Sox will be paying close attention to the righty’s status moving forward.

The Chicago are dealt with heavy storms on Sunday, as fans of the Chicago Bears are well aware of. Prior to first pitch against the Tigers, the White Sox dealt with a nearly four hour rain delay. The diamond’s conditions played a role in Martin’s exit.

He admits he has been dealing with a calf injury since April and that it was aggitating him on Sunday. But at the same time, Martin doesn’t think it’s an injury that’ll cost him a start, via Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

“Right calf, I’ve been dealing with it since April,” Martin said. “So it’s been an on and off thing. Just tonight with the instability on the mound, it was just an added little layer where I was sliding all over the place. Just kind of throbbing pain.”

With the current status of their rotation, losing Martin for any amount of time would be a significant blow. After Sunday’s showing, the right-hander now holds 3.84 ERA and a 121/45 K/BB ratio over his 28 games.

Martin is confident he won’t miss any time with his calf issue. But the White Sox will be cautious with the playoffs on their mind.
