The Chicago Bears are breathing a sigh of relief after it was revealed quarterback Caleb Williams isn’t dealing with a long-term injury. He is still week-to-week with his hamstring ailment. But a season-ending injury seems have been taken off the table.

That didn’t seem to be the case with how Williams reacted. He was writing in pain on the ground after suffering his non-contact injury. He was then helped off the field by trainers and ultimately carted to the locker room. Williams was clearly emotional on the cart, with a towel over his head. Raising his fist to help rally the crowd, it seems as if the Bears wouldn’t see their quarterback for a while.

Now that his latest injury update has been revealed, Williams has received plenty of flack. He has been questioned about why he took the cart and was so emotional for “just” a hamstring strain. The memes have already started pouring in, and it doesn’t look like the criticism will stop anytime soon.

But those who have played the sport of football understand where Williams is coming from. One former Chicago standout backed the quarterback completely.

Spending his entire seven-year career with the Bears, and earning three Pro Bowl nods, former offensive lineman Kyle Long still pays close attention to the franchise. When he saw Williams go down, he immediately understood the emotion being exuded.

“Nobody understands how much a guy like Caleb loves the game, his team and the city that calls him theirs,” Long wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “When you go down and you know you’re INJURED there is a certain intensity of emotion that hits you. All of your immediate goals and plans are derailed: that causes emotion.”

Williams wants to help the Bears reach heights they haven’t seen in decades. When the injury occurred, he didn’t know how long he’d be out. All his hopes and dreams dashed in an instant. That aspect played a major role in the quarterback’s outward expression of emotion.

The Bears first order of business is getting Williams fully healthy and back on the gridiron. Once able to defend himself, the QB will look to silence the doubters with his play. Long is on the side of those not questioning Williams’ toughness.
