Bears QB Case Keenum makes unfortunate Caleb Williams statement

The Chicago Bears saw Caleb Williams go down with a hamstring injury on Sunday. Tyson Bagent took over under center, but he is also in danger of missing Week 3 after missing Wednesday’s practice due to concussion symptoms. Case Keenum could be named the starter, and he made an unfortunate statement about the QB1’s situation.

Williams got hurt with less than eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. The team struggled to put up points all game long, losing 9-3. It came just a week after dropping 59 points over the Carolina Panthers in the season opener. The 2022 Heisman Trophy winner completed just 15-of-26 passes for 138 yards and zero touchdowns. Bagent, on the other hand, recorded 5-of-9 passes for 54 yards.

Keenum addressed the media on Wednesday. He talked about Williams’ injury and emphasized that it’s an opportunity to understand the game more.

“Every situation he’s in, there’s something to learn about leadership, quarterbacking and where to go with the ball,” Keenum said. “Another great opportunity to attack, getting better while making sure he’s ready to play. That’s the unfortunate part about injuries, you have the schedule burden of early in, late out, watching film, meeting room and extra weight room work. But now you have to fit extra treatment into your schedule, too. It’s a big learning experience for him.”

Keenum entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He has suited up for eight different franchises and has 80 games under his belt, including 66 starts. The 38-year-old has completed 1,392-of-2,233 passes for 15,175 yards and 79 touchdowns in his career.

The Bears will play the Eagles game on Monday at Soldier Field. Chicago will likely announce its starter once it releases the results of Bagent’s medical evaluation. Keenum last started an NFL game in the 2023 season with the Houston Texans.
