The Chicago White Sox held a narrow 4-3 lead against the Houston Astros entering the sixth inning of Game 2. But then second baseman Chase Meidroth essentially ended the Wild Card Series with one swing of the bat.
His three-run, 390-foot home run gave the White Sox a 7-3 advantage. That would hold as the final score, meaning Chicago swept Houston. The White Sox will now advance to face the Cleveland Guardians in the Division Series.
Through their two-game set with the Astros, Meidroth hit .571 with a home run and four RBI. His home run will steal the headlines. But the second baseman was a consistent force all series.
In the moment, Meidroth wasn’t trying to play hero ball. His sole focused remained on just trying to help the White Sox win.

Both of the runners got on base via the walk. Meidroth was aware he would likely get something to hit with Bryan Abreu trying to find the zone. The second baseman stayed focused, found his pitch and drove the White Sox to victory, via Scott Merkin of MLB.com.
“When I’m locked in on the field, I don’t know what goes through my mind,” Meidroth said. “All I’m thinking about is me and the baseball and trying to compete. But I had a good feeling.”
All year, the White Sox have been rallying around Meidroth. His 154 regular season games saw him produce a .276 batting average with 16 home runs, 63 RBIs and four stolen bases. He ranks third on the team in batting average, fourth in home runs and fifth in RBIs. Furthermore, Meidroth’s 4.5 Wins Above Replacement is the second-highest on the team.
The White Sox may know the Guardians well, but the playoffs will bring an entirely different atmosphere. Chicago will at least be more optimistic with the way Meidroth is swinging his bat.
