The first week of the 2026-27 NBA season hasn’t gone as planned for the Chicago Bulls in terms of wins and losses. Through the first six games, the Bulls are just 1-5 and needed a second-half comeback to earn that first win over Milwaukee.

This team is still trying to find itself under first year head coach Tiago Splittler. But there has been one big positive — Rookie forward Caleb Wilson.

The forward has by far been the Bulls best player and one of the top rookies. Wilson is averaging 21.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 41.7 percent from the field. Wilson has been able to score from all over the court, showcasing his offensive ability. He’s also laying well on the defensive side of the ball, a good early sign.

After the first week of the season, NBA.com updated their rookie rankings, providing a good starting point as to where things are right now. There’s been some good rookies already showcasing what they can do, including Golden State’s Yaxel Lendeborg who looks like the early favorite for Rookie of the Year. But he wasn’t No. 1, either.

Instead it’s Cameron Boozer who was 1 followed by Lendeborg and then Wilson.

Here is what Jeff Zillgitt wrote on Wilson after ranking him behind Cameron Boozer and Yaxel Lendeborg:

One of three rookies who have scored at least 30 points in a game, Wilson is also one of three first-year players averaging at least 20 points. He posted 30 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block in Chicago’s loss to Washington.

It’s still very early and this will certainly change but it’s good to see Wilson being ranked in the top three early. The newest update should have him right there at three again due to the success that Lendeborg has had as well as Boozer.

While things are rough for the Bulls right now, the bright spot is still Wilson. And that may not be a bad thing.
