The Chicago Bears’ secondary is going to look a lot different in the upcoming NFL season.
The Bears lost both of their starting safeties in free agency. Kevin Byard took his talents to the New England Patriots, while Jaquan Brisker joined the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jonathan Owens departed, opting to sign a new deal with the Indianapolis Colts.
This was perhaps the biggest void to fill for Chicago in the offseason, and the front office did just that by making two big additions to the squad. They signed Coby Bryant, who is coming off a Super Bowl win with the Seattle Seahawks. The Bears will pair him with rookie safety Dillon Thieneman, whom they selected 25th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The relationship between Bryant and Thieneman will be pivotal for the Bears. They are expected to start opposite each other for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen’s secondary.
The good news is that Bryant already sees great potential in his younger counterpart. The incoming fifth-year defensive back had nothing but high praise for Thieneman.
“Once he sees something he recognizes, he makes a play right away, that’s the biggest thing, especially playing safety in this defense as well,” Bryant said of the Oregon product. “He’s had a great spring. I know he’ll continue to grow.”
Apart from leading Chicago’s secondary, Bryant is also expected to mentor Thieneman. The 21-year-old appears ready to take on the role of an NFL starter, but he will definitely need all the help he can get as he transitions into the pros.
The Bears have more than a few veterans on the squad who can help Thieneman, but there’s no denying that Bryant’s guidance will be of utmost importance for the young safety.
