The Chicago White Sox first signing of the 2026/2027 off-season goes to Alec Marsh. He is a former 70th overall draft selection by the Kansas City Royals, who over the 2023 and 2024 seasons posted a 4.96 ERA over 203.1 innings, primarily as in a starting pitcher role.

Unfortunately, shoulder issues and eventual surgery have kept Marsh out of live action across both the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Kansas City then outrighted him off their 40-man roster as he still accrued service time over that stretch as was arbitration eligible this winter.

Chicago has since scooped him up on a minor league deal that includes an invite to Spring Training. This signing was first reported by James Fegan and Scott Merkin.

Last season, the White Sox learned just how important organizational pitching depth can be, particularly when it comes to having arms capable of stepping in and covering innings. On paper, Marsh fits that mold, bringing both starting experience and a taste of the major leagues.

However, there’s also the potential for him to provide more than simply organizational depth. If Marsh exceeds expectations and delivers meaningful contributions at the big-league level, this signing could turn into an even bigger win for the White Sox.

This is the type of low-risk move that makes sense for a White Sox organization looking to build upon the success they had in 2026 while continuing to improve its depth. Marsh also gets an opportunity to continue his professional career. It may not be the type of signing that grabs headlines, but sometimes the most meaningful offseason moves go unnoticed initially.
