Fever win reignites Caitlin Clark vs. Stephanie White drama

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) talks to Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White

The Indiana Fever made it two wins in a row on Sunday after they blew out the defending champions, the Las Vegas Aces, 84-68. The Aces were without reigning WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson due to an ankle injury.

That’s now back-to-back wins for Indiana following their convincing 111-87 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on June 27.

Incidentally, the Fever won both games without the services of cornerstone superstar Caitlin Clark. The three-time All-Star sat out a second consecutive matchup due to a back injury.

Kelsey Mitchell (27 points) and Aliyah Boston (18 points, 10 rebounds) led the charge for the Fever on Sunday. Indiana has now improved to 12-8 and is looking to keep the momentum going.

Is Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White’s system better without Caitlin Clark?

Fever coach Stephanie White turned to Tyasha Harris again on Sunday to fill the void Clark left. Harris responded with four points and five assists in 26 minutes of action.

Despite the win, some fans on social media could not help but reignite the raging debate surrounding Clark’s fit in White’s system. While other supporters were just happy to celebrate the win, others just had to point out that White’s offensive tactics supposedly work better without Clark.

“Steph White’s system absolutely works better without Caitlin Clark… Why I’ve said it from game 2 last year… You either choose Steph or CC…” a comment on X read.

“Caitlin is definitely the problem then, her system works with every player but her. Kelsey Mitchell is better at carrying the team imo. Caitlin is 0-6 against Aces, even when Steph White wasn’t there. So you can’t really blame Steph,” another said.

“No point guard has ever looked good playing for Stephanie White. Her system needs PGs to just pass side to side and be connectors,” argued a user.

“Her system low-key is catered more towards Boston her system is catered towards the forwards letting Aliyah Boston run the show,” a fan wrote.

“yep whites system works better with a point foward being the main ball handler does not fit a point guard dominent player like caitlin who needs the ball,” a reaction read.

“They have been looking cohesive these last 3 games,” pointed out another.
Not everyone is on the same boat, though. More than a few Fever supporters quickly shut down the narrative, claiming that these naysayers are merely clutching at straws.

Either way, Clark is hoping to return to action for the Fever’s next game. They are set to face the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday, followed by a matchup against the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday.

If the Fever lose upon Clark’s return, there is little doubt that the ongoing debate will only get louder.
