Former Chicago Bears standout falling down new team’s depth chart

Over the offseason, the Chicago Bears decided to completely remake that secondary. That included letting Nahshon Wright walk in free agency.

The cornerback ultimately signed a one-year, $5.5 million deal with the New York Jets. While he made a strong first impression, Wright has been passed up on the depth chart with Week 1 looming, via Zack Rosenblatt of the Athletic, h/t his colleague Dan Wiederer.

“Once the summer started, though, second-year corner Azareye’h Thomas got the first reps with the starters,” Rosenblatt wrote. “Then Wright dealt with an injury that knocked him out for most of training camp and ultimately cost him a chance to legitimately push to start. Thomas is highly unproven and doesn’t have a history of forcing turnovers, so it’s still entirely possible Wright eventually gets another shot. But for now he’ll be more of a depth piece than someone who gets significant playing time.”

An injury is out of Wright’s control, and when he ramps back up perhaps he is in the starting mix again. But before the injury, the cornerback was already demoted to the second team. The Jets are in desperate need of ball hawking corners and hope Wright will soon be in the mix. But at least entering Week 1, his status is murky at best.

Nahshon Wright’s one-year run with Chicago Bears

The Bears signed Wright to a one-year deal prior to the 2025 season. It didn’t take long for him to make an impact. Appearing in all 17 games, starting 16, the cornerback put up 80 tackles, 11 passes defended and five interceptions – all career-highs. Wright was awarded the first Pro Bowl nomination of his career for his efforts.

Because of that, some fans were shocked to see the cornerback not re-signed. Especially seeing as his contract with the Jets wasn’t the most lucrative. In the end though, Wright’s time with the Bears was short-lived.

If he doesn’t climb back up the depth chart, his Jets tenure could be over in a flash as well. Whenever he is on the field, Wright will be trying to live up to the hype from his 2025 campaign.
