Making the Chicago Bears 53-man roster out of training camp was already once feat of strength. But by actually making his full return, left tackle Ozzy Trapilo will have seriously defied the odds.
Rupturing his patellar tendon in the Divisional Round, there were concerns Trapilo could miss the entire season. The Bears brought back Braxton Jones and had Jedrick Wills Jr and Kiran Amegadjie on the roster throughout training camp if that were the case.
However, Trapilo was back on the gridiron by the close of training camp. His lightning quick return completely changed Chicago’s left tackle plans, ousting Wills and Amegadjie. Jones remains the starter entering Week 1, but Trapilo still has some hurdles to cross.
One of them is participating in team drills. But it seems like that could happen sooner rather than later.

As the Bears prepare for their season opener against the Carolina Panthers, Trapilo is knocking off the rust and re-finding his footing on the field. For offensive line coach Dan Roushar, it shouldn’t be long before the left tackle is fully cleared, via Adam Hoge of CHGO.
“I think we’re getting closer,” Roushar said. “We’ve done post-work with him on bodies. It’s certainly different than actually going out there and putting it all together, but I’ve been really encouraged with what he’s done so far.”
The Bears aren’t going to rush Trapilo any further than he has already pushed himself. Being on the active roster, he is able to practice and prepare with the team. But the lineman is still coming off of a serious injury. Chicago wants to ensure he is fully healthy before throwing him to the wolves.
Not placing Trapilo on the PUP list could be a sign the Bears expect him to play within the first four games. But the first order of business is matching him up against live competition. Roushar plans to do everything in his power to get Trapilo to that point.
