Bears’ Ben Johnson spits 8-word bar over high scoring expectations

The Chicago Bears, specifically their offense, are the talk of the NFL coming out of Week 1 after they put up 59 points against the Carolina Panthers. However, that will lead to even loftier expectations.

Weekly, the Bears will now be predicted to be one of the league’s highest scorers. If they’re not, the franchise is sure to catch plenty of flack from the media. Chicago now has a target on their back as one of the best offensive teams in the league.

Ultimately, that is Johnson’s goal. But no team is absolutely perfect. He doesn’t want any given game to be considered a complete failure if the Bears don’t eclipse 50 points.

Furthermore, the head coach isn’t one who focuses on the past. Week 1 is already behind Chicago. All they can do now is focus on the next points they score.

The head coach was asked essentially if his players would get complacent knowing they have the capability to score nearly 60. Johnson shut that idea down in a heartbeat. He is proud of the offensive explosion. But Super Bowls aren’t won in Week 1, via Johnson’s Wednesday press conference.

“We haven’t put up any points this week,” Johnson said.

The Bears are planning to get better at every opportunity. What fans saw in Week 1 may not be what is on the field come Week 2. Of course, Chicago wants the same level of fireworks and wants to rack up the points. But they know the work that must be put in to light up the scoreboard.

Chicago’s Week 1 point total will remain a highlight throughout the season. But Johnson doesn’t want it to be the only highlight.
