Chicago Bears make big decision on Ozzy Trapilo right before Vikings game

The Chicago Bears appeared to have good news for starting left tackle Ozzy Trapilo on their final injury report of the week on Friday.

The Bears revealed they had no players designated with a status for the contest. Trapilo, who is recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee, was a full participant at Friday’s practice, which seemed to indicate he’d have a chance to make a start against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, the Bears listed Trapilo as inactive, meaning he will not be available to play Minnesota in Week 2. In addition to Trapilo, the Bears added James Kormah, Jordan McFadden, Jayden Loving, and Case Keenum to the inactive list. Keenum will be the emergency third quarterback.

Earlier in the week, Bears offensive coordinator Press Taylor said the team was listening to the advice of the athletic staff on how to handle Trapilo’s status.

“He’s getting mixed in here and there,” Taylor said, via Fox 32. “Again, we’re just following the advice of the athletic staff.”

Earlier in September, Bears general manager Ryan Poles said Trapilo had some “rust to knock off” before the team was ready for him to be involved in the game plan either as a starter or rotational player. The injury Trapilo suffered was substantial, and usually takes players nearly a year or more to recover from.

For now, the Bears will rely on Braxton Jones to start at left tackle. Pro Football Focus graded Jones as the No. 39 best offensive tackle in the league for Week 1.

The Bears offense exploded for 59 points in their opener in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. The Vikings, under defense coordinator Brian Flores, will be a much tougher matchup for Chicago and head coach Ben Johnson.

Flores likes to bring pressure at the line of scrimmage, which could be a complication for Jones.
