The Chicago Bears entered the 2026 NFL Draft in desperate need of playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. With their first pick, Chicago found one in the form of safety Dillon Thieneman.
Through his first three games at the NFL level, Thieneman has put up 23 tackles, three passes defended and an interception. He leads the Bears in tackles and is seen consistently flying over the field to get to the ball carrier.
Thrust into a starting role as a rookie, Thieneman was already facing high expectations. But with running mate Coby Bryant suffering a potentially season-ending injury, the safety was forced to take on an even higher level of leadership.
So far, so good. Thieneman’s play has certainly caught the eye of defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

In the Bears’ 27-7 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, Thieneman recorded his first NFL interception. For Allen, it was just another sign of how far the rookie safety has already grown, via CHGO.
“Each and every day, each and every week, he continues to improve,” Allen said. “He’s starting to get a better feel for the defense. Better feel for how the offense is trying to attack us. He’s becoming the guy we thought that he would be.”
“Anytime you got a guy who has the speed and range back there, they kind of become an eraser,” he continued. “They eliminate explosive plays. He’s still in the early part of his development, there’s a lot of growth for him there.”

Thieneman will continually be thrown into the fire and be expected to produce. But based on his early results, Allen doesn’t think he’ll have any trouble doing so. The defensive coordinator will be watching Chicago’s new safety with eagle eyes throughout his rookie campaign.
