Chicago Bears: Tyson Bagent named “Top priority” for AFC contender as trade deadline nears

Later tonight, the Chicago Bears will battle the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in a highly anticipated matchup. Just days after a blockbuster trade netted the Bears an All-Pro defensive tackle, fans are eager to see how the defense looks.

Starting QB Caleb Williams has been fantastic since coming back from injury and will look to continue that tonight. The famous “12th man” is one of the toughest places to play in the league, as the Seattle crowd will test this Bears offense once again.

Williams’ backup, Tyson Bagent, has been the talk of the QB trade market over the past few weeks. Bagent didn’t look great in his appearances this year, but he’s young and has impressed in the past, making him a cheap rental for a contender.

After the injury to Lamar Jackson in yesterday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Baltimore Ravens have emerged as a real possibility to get Bagent. Jason La Canfora of Sports Illustrated reported that Bagent is a top target for the Ravens due to his past relationship with Declan Doyle, the offensive coordinator for Baltimore.

With limited options on the QB market, Bagent could be moved for the right price.

After the impressive performance by third-string QB Case Keenum earlier in the year, the trade talks surrounding Tyson Bagent increased. Even with his youth and cheap contract, Bagent could net the Bears a few mid-round draft picks. After giving up a lot to get Jeffery Simmons, those could prove valuable.

La Canfora mentioned that the Bears don’t need to trade Bagent and could really control the negotiations if the Ravens do indeed reach out.

Multiple league sources told me through the summer that the Bears were rebuffing all overtures for Badgent (who makes $4M this year and $4M next year), who they believe can be a valuable back-up in Ben Johnson’s system.

“Chicago doesn’t have to trade him,” one NFL GM told me. “They like him … Wonder how hard they squeeze DeCosta?”

He continued, saying, “A trade would be ideal, and while there are few options in that vein, who already have an understanding of the system rookie offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is operating.”

The Bears know that Bagent proves to be a valuable piece for the Ravens, as he has worked with Doyle previously. The Ravens play on Thursday night, so this trade would need to happen very soon if he were to get prepped and play. With Chicago playing on Monday, it only complicates things.

So far in the season, Bagent has thrown three interceptions to zero touchdowns. He’s completed about 65% of his passes and looked rusty on tape. None of this matters to Baltimore, who also lost backup Tyler Huntley to injury, making the desperation of the situation even more dire.
