Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai returned to practice as a limited participant for the first time since he suffered thumb and toe injuries in Week 4’s 23-12 win over the New York Jets.
Monangai had a monster day against the Jets, rushing for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Despite being a limited participant on Friday, the Bears marked the running back as questionable to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Sunday Night Football” this week.
Per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Monangai will not play on Sunday night. He’s expected to next play after the Bears’ bye in Week 10 when Chicago hosts the New Orleans Saints in Week 11. The Bears should have rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad II and Tyrique Stevenson against Tampa Bay.
“Bears RB Kyle Monangai (thumb/toe) won’t play today, but he’s expected back in Week 11,” Rapoport posted on X. “Fresh legs for Chicago. Meanwhile, DB Malik Muhammad II (toe) and CB Tyrique Stevenson Sr. (thumb) should be good to go. Stevenson will play with a splint.”

Earlier this week, Bears head coach Ben Johnson said it was hard to estimate when Monangai could return, calling the nature of his toe injury “fickle.”
“Each injury is a little bit different,” Johnson said, via the Bears’ website. “And you try to get a timeline, an approximation of what you think it could be, and some guys come back a little bit sooner, some guys take a little bit longer. Those toe injuries, those can be fickle at times, and that’s what this one’s proved to be.”
Monangai leads the Bears in yards per carry (5.4) this season. D’Andre Swift has been the lead back with Monangai out. Since playing the Jets, Swift has rushed for 234 yards in his last four games.
Simply put, the Bears are missing their bruiser in the backfield.
