Chicago Cubs: Dansby Swanson makes MLB history in doubleheader sweep of Mets

The Chicago Cubs entered Wednesday 41-37, but ended the day 43-37 after sweeping both games of their doubleheader against the New York Mets. They won the first game 10-3 and the second game 10-5. In both contests, shortstop Dansby Swanson had a significant impact on the outcome. Of their 20 runs, he drove in 11 of them.

It was a great sight to see for Cubs fans, who become increasingly frustrated as Swanson struggled at the plate all year long. Manager Craig Counsell, though, refused to remove him entirely from the lineup because of the stellar defense that he players.

And on Wednesday, his patience paid off.

Batting ninth in the first game, Swanson went 2-4 with two home runs and seven RBI. His first home run was a three-run shot in the sixth inning, and his second was a grand slam in the eight.

In the ninth spot again for the second game, Swanson went 3-5 with a triple and four RBI. He also stole a base.

What he did on Wednesday was not only impressive, it was historic:

Not only did Swanson accomplish all of these things on the same day, but he also raised his batting average over .200. He is now hitting .202/.303/.385 with 11 home runs, 46 RBI, and 10 stolen bases.

It is also worth noting that in the previous game before the doubleheader, Swanson was 2-3 with a home run and four RBI. He has driven in 15 runs over his last three games.

It is unrealistic to expect this kind of run to continue, but it sure does seem like the Cubs shortstop has finally broken out of his slump, and that could go a long way in making the offense more consistent.
