Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark

Caitlin Clark suffered a back injury on Wednesday as the Indiana Fever lost to the Phoenix Mercury at home, 111-109.

This was the second matchup between these two teams in the last three days. The Mercury avenged Monday’s 86-77 loss in what turned out to be another testy encounter.

Clark tweaked her back in the second quarter after being fouled on a three-point attempt. She was eventually ruled out for the rest of the game.

The former Iowa Hawkeyes star has been dealing with a back issue throughout the season. In fact, Clark sat out one game in May due to a back strain. It remains to be seen if the two-time All-Star will be forced to miss time after Wednesday’s injury.

Did Alyssa Thomas have bad intentions towards Caitlin Clark?

Clark had to deal with the Mercury’s physicality throughout the contest. As a matter of fact, the Fever superstar was involved in another controversial moment during the game.

In a separate incident in the second quarter, Phoenix star Alyssa Thomas collapsed on Clark while pursuing the ball. Video replays showed how Thomas appeared to drive her fist into Clark’s throat.

A new angle of the play in question has emerged. It makes the sequence look much worse as Thomas’ knee can also be seen making contact with Clark’s groin.

It is worth noting that a groin injury forced the Fever to shut Clark down for the remainder of the 2025 season after just 13 games.

There is no way to tell what Thomas’ true intentions were during the play. What cannot be denied, however, is that the Fever guard took multiple blows during the game. One of them even took her out of the contest, as she now faces potential missed time due to the back injury.
