Cubs fans will only be frustrated by Jed Hoyer’s latest take on Dansby Swanson

The Chicago Cubs had a streaky start to the 2026 season. Within their first 40 games, they had two separate 10 game winning streaks, only to lose 10 consecutive from the middle to the end of May. Now, nearing the halfway point in the season, they find themselves a few games over .500, third in the National League Central, and fighting to get back into a better position to be contenders for a post season spot.
From an individual player standpoint, shortstop Dansby Swanson has had a similar type of season. He put on a great display of power during the month of April, hitting six home runs, while being productive and driving in 21 batters. From there, the wheels have fallen off, as he hit for just a .151 batting average during the month of May and .132 so far in June, failing to positively contribute at the plate.
Overall, Swanson now finds himself with just a .175 batting average overall. Courtesy of Silvy on the social media platform X, this is the lowest batting average of any position player with at least 265 plate appearances in the modern era. Despite these struggles, president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has no desire to make an adjustment.

Dansby Swanson will continue to be the Chicago Cubs shortstop despite historic struggles offensively
Swanson, who is in the middle of a seven year, $177 million deal signed back in December of 2022, will continue to be the starting shortstop for the Cubs, per Jed Hoyer. Jesse Rogers of ESPN reported that Hoyer said, “We can’t run away from our run prevention when we struggle offensively.”
According to Baseball Savant, Swanson has been worth +8 Outs Above Average (OAA) this season, ranking among the best defensive shortstops in baseball. The value he provides in the field is undeniable, but his production at the plate has been far more difficult to justify. Despite flashes of power earlier this year, Swanson has struggled to consistently get on base and has often found himself mired in prolonged slumps, making him an increasingly polarizing figure in the Cubs lineup. For a player earning star-level money, we are not left hoping that he provides more than elite defense alone this season and figures things out fast.
