Chicago White Sox need special arrangement for Tarik Skubal trade

The Chicago White Sox are expected to aggressively pursue pitching help before the trade deadline on Aug. 3.

The young White Sox lineup has been hot this spring, putting them squarely in the postseason race. But the starting rotation has issues and ranks No. 29 in ERA. Chicago’s start against the New York Yankees this week shows how badly the team needs a boost to the rotation.

New York Mets starting pitcher Freddy Peralta seems like a good choice for the White Sox, as his $8 million salary would be manageable for a young team that’s still rebuilding.

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal has been mentioned as a potential option for Chicago by Mike Axisa of CBS Sports. During an appearance on “The Score” on Thursday, White Sox color analyst Steve Stone threw cold water on the proposition, suggesting Tigers president Scott Harris would want a deal too rich for Chicago to make.

The White Sox would have to “secure” Skubal’s future. He would be a costly rental for a young team that needs to keep as many valuable pieces in the organization as possible.

“Well, if you think that the White Sox are going after Tarik Skubal, I think perhaps they should check the water over there in your building, because number one, to give Scott Harris what he wants for Skubal, you’re going to have to make a deal ahead of time that secures his future in whatever team he’s going to,” Stone said.

“The Dodgers would be the logical team. They have both the money and the prospects. The White Sox will not be in the Skubal acquisition phase.”

The Tigers will certainly be looking to trade Skubal this summer if the team doesn’t make a turnaround before August. Harris will want to get something in return for Skubal before he heads to free agency at the end of the season.

The White Sox aren’t ready to make such a move, but the team will explore more reasonable options that won’t have the same upside as Skubal.
