White Sox named top trade destination for 104 mph flamethrower

The Chicago White Sox have been one of the best stories in baseball this season. Expected by most to finish in the cellar of the AL Central, the White Sox are 39-36 and are battling with the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the division.

But while Chicago is an obvious playoff contender, it’s also abundantly clear that the team has some holes it must address if it wants to continue its push.

The White Sox absolutely need to add another arm in their starting rotation, they could use another bat and they could also stand to improve their bullpen, especially at the back end where closer Seranthony Dominguez has been shaky.

But will Chicago aggressively buy before the MLB trade deadline? Or will general manager Chris Getz take a more conservative approach?

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com seems to believe the White Sox may decide to push in their chips and has labeled them a top destination for Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman.

The Red Sox have fallen out of contention, and with Chapman in the last year of his contract, it makes sense for Boston to move him now.

Should the Red Sox decide to trade him, Chicago should absolutely check in. The 38-year-old boats a 0.83 ERA and 0.969 WHIP this season while averaging 12 strikeouts per nine innings. He still regularly touches 100 mph with his fastball, even throwing a 103.8 mph pitch earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, Dominguez owns a 3.67 ERA and has struggled mightily with his command. He would probably be better off in a setup role, and if the South Siders can bring Chapman into the fold, it would give them a pretty dynamic late-inning duo.

Chapman wouldn’t be cheap, but he also wouldn’t cost the White Sox a ton given his impending free-agent status and the fact that he is a reliever, not a starter.

The question is whether or not Getz would feel comfortable surrendering any sort of valuable assets for an aging closer headed toward the open market next winter. It’s a tough question for Chicago, but if the White Sox do end up seeking relief help, it’s hard to find a better answer than Chapman.
