Caitlin Clark received her fifth technical foul of the season on Monday night as the Indiana Fever secured an 86-77 victory against the Phoenix Mercury.

There was no shortage of action in the fiery affair, and Clark found herself in the middle of one of the game’s heated incidents during the fourth quarter.

The two-time All-Star got into it with Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner, who was also Clark’s former teammate on the Fever. The two had words after getting tangled up as they battled for positioning. Clark eventually walked away, but the refs did not like how she clapped towards the Mercury’s direction.

The game officials assessed a technical foul against Clark for instigating.

Clark was incensed when she learned that she received a tech. She immediately approached the refs to get an explanation. After the game, the 24-year-old relayed what the game officials told her.

“Yeah, it’s ridiculous,” she said in her postgame press conference. “I got a technical for clapping. We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game that I’m going to be suspended for if I’m going to get technicals for clapping.

“I asked (referee) Gerda. Gerda said that I got a technical for clapping. So if any technical should be taken away, it should be that one. If it’s truly for clapping, that’s what they said they gave it to me for, was for clapping. So it’s just ridiculous. I don’t understand it at all.”

With her fifth tech of the season, Clark is now just three away from an automatic one-game suspension. Despite this development, however, the Fever star remains defiant.

“I mean, I’m going to play with emotion, I’m going to play with passion, and if they’re going to give me a technical foul for clapping, then so be it,” she stated. “That’s their choice.

“They can come back and review that play, and I’d love to hear what they say of the reasoning of why I got the technical foul in that situation and why other players on their team didn’t get a technical foul in that situation.

“… I’m disappointed in them.”

The Fever and the Mercury will face off again on Wednesday in a rematch at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
