WNBA: Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham

It comes as no surprise that Sophie Cunningham found herself in the middle of an intense moment in the Indiana Fever’s 86-77 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday.

Cunningham received a technical foul after pointing at Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner, who was also her former Fever teammate. Bonner pointed back at Cunningham and had to be held back as she confronted the Indiana star.

Bonner was also issued a technical foul. The same was the case for Caitlin Clark, who was penalized for instigating the scuffle.

Cunningham had a lot to say about the incident after the game, making it abundantly clear that there’s no love lost between her and Bonner.

Things got heated between both teams during the incident. Fever forward Myisha Hines-Allen went face-to-face with Mercury star Alyssa Thomas, and both players also got technical fouls.

The referees were able to de-escalate the situation, and the game carried on. However, Hines-Allen got herself ejected just seconds later after shoving Thomas.

Cunningham came to her teammate’s defense after the game. She was within earshot of Hines-Allen and Thomas’ heated confrontation. Cunningham revealed that the Mercury went over the line.

“I think if you heard what people called Myisha, then you probably would have been thrown out, too, and how she reacted was valid,” Cunningham said, via The Athletic.

The 29-year-old did not disclose what exactly she heard, but it is clear that Cunningham felt Hines-Allen had every right to defend herself.

Either way, the 6-foot-1 guard is happy to move on after the win.

“That all happened, we got the dub,” Cunningham stated. “We gotta dial in and be better on Wednesday.”

The Fever and the Mercury will settle some unfinished business on Wednesday in a rematch at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
