Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has all the fuel he needs heading into his third NFL season. The 24-year-old signal-caller does not shy away from criticism. He embraces it and keeps receipts.
Williams took note of former NFL offensive lineman Mark Schlereth’s scorching take on the “Stinkin’ Truth Podcast.” The FOX Sports analyst called out his skills directly.
“Caleb Williams is not a good quarterback,” the two-time Pro Bowler turned sportscaster said. “If you were ranking that (draft) class, you’d put Jayden Daniels ahead of him. You’d put Drake Maye ahead of him. I’d put Bo Nix ahead of him.
“This generational talent who’s supposed to be a great quarterback, he’s not a great quarterback. He’s a great playmaker, and when it comes to off-schedule football, the guy is probably as good as it gets. He is Kyler Murray with more hype.”
Williams stayed composed amid the criticism. Instead, his reaction was to retweet the clip on X, saying everything without saying a word.
On the same podcast, Schlereth took aim at Williams’ 58.1% completion percentage as further evidence of his case.
“He’s a dynamic athlete. He makes big-time plays, but is he a good quarterback?” Schlereth continued. “No, he’s not a good quarterback because he doesn’t play on schedule.
“I mean, my evaluation is watch how many times they get into a late in the third quarter, late in the fourth quarter and they’re down 21-7, right? And then he holds the ball, scrambles around, he makes three big throws and all of a sudden they win a game 21-24. That’s not playing quarterback at an efficient level. That’s being a dynamic playmaker.”
The numbers tell a different story. Williams became the first Bears quarterback to surpass 3,900 passing yards in a single season, finishing with 3,942. His 31 touchdowns set a new franchise record. He led the NFL and set a Bears franchise record with seven fourth-quarter comebacks.
Across his first two seasons, Williams has thrown for 7,483 yards and 47 touchdowns. It marks the best back-to-back totals in Bears history.
Last season, Chicago finished 11-6 and claimed the NFC North title for the first time since 2018. The Bears also returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. They enter 2026 as one of the most compelling teams in the NFL.
Williams has heard it all before. The chip on his shoulder is not going anywhere.
