The controversy surrounding Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and Phoenix Mercury veteran Alyssa Thomas is beginning to die down.

On June 24, Thomas drove her fist into Clark’s throat as the latter fell to the ground. The referees did not call a foul on the play, but the WNBA decided to investigate the incident retroactively. The league determined that Thomas committed a non-basketball act. She was issued a Flagrant 2 foul and a one-game suspension.

Clark finally broke her silence about the controversy during Friday’s practice. Be it intentional or not, the 24-year-old reignited the flame by finally addressing the incident.

When Thomas first opened up about her suspension, the All-Star forward denied having any bad intentions towards Clark during the scuffle.

“A lot of us, myself included, didn’t even know the play took place until after the game,” Thomas claimed, asserting that the contact was incidental.

Clark, however, had other thoughts. She made her opinion of the matter very clear with a blunt statement.

“I did think it was a flagrant foul,” the Fever guard told reporters on Friday. “… I don’t really think that it was up for debate. Obviously it wasn’t called in real time. You go back and watch the clip. I think it’s pretty straightforward.”

Clark acknowledged that the referees have a thankless job and, more often than not, find themselves in a “very difficult spot.” However, Clark also reiterated the WNBA’s role in protecting the players.

Clark did not directly comment on whether she believes Thomas deserves to be suspended, but her opinion on the flagrant foul is clear as day.
