Is a early leader emerging at left tackle for Chicago Bears?

The Chicago Bears are officially back at practice at Halas Hall for training camp, fresh off a NFC North title in 2025. It won’t be easy to repeat as division champions but the work starts now for Ben Johnson’s team.

As Chicago enters training camp, they have some big questions at key positions. Among them is at left tackle. After Ozzy Trapilo finally looked like he had grabbed a hold of that starting left tackle job, and then a devastating leg injury happened. Trapilo suffered that injury in the playoff win over the Green Bay Packers and it will likely keep him out the entire year.

The Bears enter this training camp with Braxton Jones, Jedrick Wills and Kiran Amegadjie as the competitors at left tackle. And while it’s only been a few practices, the reps are leaning one way.

Does Braxton Jones have the inside track as the starter?

It’s hard to say there’s an early leader for this position. The Bears have been out there for just two practices, with one being a ramp up. While things were a bit more up to speed on Thursday, something that remained the same was the reps at left tackle.

Braxton Jones continued to take the reps with the first team out there in team drills. He’s earned the majority of the reps but I did notice that Jedrick Wills was mixing in a bit more.

As Adam Jahns notes, Wills was subbed in and took the final rep of the team drill on Thursday:

Jones is looking like the player that is getting the first shot at taking a lead for this starting job. It’s not over just yet but it feels like it truly is his to lose here in training camp.

As for Amegadjie, he could be in a tough spot. He’s been working with the third team but has been getting second team reps as well. It will be tough for him to beat out Jones and Wills as it stands now.
