Chicago White Sox GM Chris Getz reveals why team was never deep in high-profile trade talks

At 58-52, the Chicago White Sox are the only team in the American League Central Division with a record over .500. They currently have a three-game lead over the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Guardians, while the Detroit Tigers (who have won two games in a row), are 5.5 games back.

It would appear, though, that the Tigers have waved the white flag on their season. On Saturday night, they traded two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers. What is more, they are expected to trade more of their players ahead of Monday’s deadline.

For their part, the White Sox made a trade last night, though not as notable of one as fans may have wanted.

Last night, it was reported that Chicago had acquired three-time All-Star Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners. The White Sox sent reliever Seranthony Dominguez, Nolan Jones, and catching prospect Boston Smith to the Mariners in return.

Castillo has made 20 starts this year, but is just 3-9 with a 5.06 ERA. He is, though, under club control through next season.

On Sunday, White Sox general manager Chris Getz revealed that they were not and are not in the market for any rentals that would cost them any top prospects.

According to Chicago insider Jesse Rogers, Getz said, “When you’re having these conversations about potential rental starters or controllable starters and you get an idea of what the cost is going to be, and candidly, with some of these meaningful rental starters that will be available here in the next day or so, we didn’t want to go into our top 100 prospects.”

Castillo may not have been on many fans’ radars, especially considering he is having a down year. But the White Sox have turned their ship around quite quickly and, at this point, should be given the benefit of the doubt.
