Before the 2026 MLB season, the Chicago Cubs made the decision to sign free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to a five-year $175 million contract. With such a large salary, the team hoped that he would be an immediate force in the middle of their lineup. Unfortunately, that is not how things came to pass.
In March/April, Bregman hit .258/.350/.371 with three home runs and 11 RBI. In May, he struggled more, slashing .261/.331/.357 with two home runs and seven RBI.
But even that was not as bad as June, when he hit .200/.348/.300 with two home runs and 11 RBI. It was not until after the All-Star break that Chicago started to see a return on its investment.

As of late, though, Bregman has been on a tear. Indeed, in 31 games played since the All-Star break, the Cubs third baseman is hitting .296/.371/.536 with seven home runs and 22 RBI.
His recent stretch led a panel of reporters and analysts from MLB.com to declare Bregman the ninth-best hitter in baseball (currently):
“Like Alonso, Bregman signed a five-year deal with a new team in the offseason, arriving with expectations of helping lead a club with high hopes for 2026. Like Alonso, he didn’t introduce himself to a new fanbase with his best foot forward. And, once more, like Alonso, he is rectifying that as the season goes along. Bregman owns an .888 OPS since July 1, with nine of his 16 total home runs, and perhaps not coincidentally, the Cubs are 26-15 in that time.”
It is also worth noting that Bregman now has more RBI (63) at this point in the season than he did all of last year (62). He has not produced to the level Chicago has wanted overall, but he is starting to be more productive when they have needed him to be the most.
Come October, it will not matter how badly he struggled earlier in the year if he keeps on hitting the way he has in August.
