At 66-61, the Chicago White Sox are currently sitting 3.5-games up and in first place in the American League Central Division. Even the most optimistic fan likely could admit that they did not foresee this being a true statement before the season started.
Indeed, the 2026 White Sox have been one of best feel-good stories in baseball in recent memory. After three straight seasons in which they lost more than 100 games, Chicago is on the verge of making the American League postseason.
The season, however, is not over yet. There are 35 games remaining on their schedule, and they will need to finish strong in order to cap off what has been a surprisingly entertaining year.

MLB.com recently asked each team’s insider what the biggest question is that their club is facing. White Sox reporter Scott Merkin wrote the following:
“The White Sox added right-hander Luis Castillo at the Deadline, hoping to give the team another experienced starter who can help them get through these innings during the stretch drive to the postseason. Sean Burke also has been one of the best starters in the game since June 18.
“But Davis Martin currently is on the 15-day IL with a blister issue, posting a 6.52 ERA since he hit a low ERA mark of 1.61 on May 16. Noah Schultz, one of the team’s top pitching prospects, is currently back with Triple-A Charlotte, as the White Sox not only try to lock down the American League Central title but keep this rotation strong into the playoffs. They used an opener and bulk hurlers in each of the last two games of their series at Wrigley Field.”
Martin has certainly come down to earth after his fantastic start to the season. In March/April, he was 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA. The following month, he went 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA. By the end of May, he was an impressive 8-1 with a sparkling 2.00 ERA.
Since then, he is 1-6 with a 6.52 ERA. In his last seven starts, he has an ERA of 8.48.
Luis Castillo has not been the stabilizing force that they had hoped he would be when they traded for him. In three starts since arriving in Chicago, he is 1-0 with a 4.60 ERA with just one quality start.
If the White Sox are to finish the season at the top of the AL Central, their pitching needs to hold up, and based on recent performances, it is fair to wonder if they will.
