Chicago Bears free agents already bought in to Ben Johnson’s winning culture

Head coach Ben Johnson was hired to completely change the culture of the Chicago Bears. Year one proved that experiment to be a success, as the Bears won the NFC North. The franchise is now looking to keep their seat at the postseason table.

For available free agents, Chicago’s current setup clearly has appeal. Defensive back Neville Gallimore and Cam Lewis each signed with the franchise over the offseason. It didn’t take long for them to buy into the Bears vision and align with Johnson’s goals, via Dan Wiederer of the Athletic.

“The standard here is just different. The culture. The mindset,” Gallimore said. “There is no gray. It’s ‘This is how we play. This is our standard. This is what we’re trying to accomplish.’ So you’re not going to come in here and do your own thing. You’re going to do things according to what is being asked.”

“Guys just want to win,” he continued. “Guys want to get better. There are no egos. Everybody here just loves football. For me, a guy who loves the game and feels like his best football is still ahead, as I continue to chase that, there’s no better team to be a part of.”

Lewis, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, saw his team ascend the AFC East ranks. He knows what it takes to be a perennial contender. Now with the Bears, Lewis is getting the same vibes and clearly sees the team’s want to win.

“Everybody was fighting for the same goal,” Lewis said. “To have that camaraderie all the time, even when we’re not on the field, makes you want to play for your brother. I think that’s what we’re trying to do here as well.”

Neville Gallimore, Cam Lewis enter key roles with Chicago Bears

With the Bears trading Gervon Dexter to the Atlanta Falcons, Gallimore will be forced to play a much larger role in the defensive tackle rotation. He is coming to Chicago with six years of NFL experience, appearing in 83 games. In that span, Gallimore has put up 147 tackles, 16 quarterback hits and 7.5 sacks.

Lewis played a versatile role on the Bills, filling numerous spots on the secondary. With injuries to Coby Bryant and Kyler Gordon, he is poised for a similar job on the Bears. Wherever he is on the gridiron though, Chicago is expecting results. Lewis has registered 166 tackles, 11 passes defended and an interception over his six years in the league.

The Bears clearly believe in both players after signing them in free agency. Now Gallimore and Lewis are bought in to the culture of Chicago. The only thing left to do is help the franchise continue their winning ways.
