Chicago Cubs’ 2026 breakout pitcher’s season officially comes to an end

Seven months ago, the Chicago Cubs saw a noticeably improved Ben Brown during Spring Training. The addition of a sinker over the offseason generated plenty of buzz, and a strong spring ultimately helped Brown secure one of the Cubs’ final spots on the Opening Day roster.

That opportunity came despite his 5.95 ERA over 106 innings the previous season, as the new weapon in his arsenal looked like the perfect complement to his fastball and curveball. That proved to be the case early in 2026, as Brown gave the Cubs exactly what they needed while the pitching staff dealt with a long list of injuries: length and results.

Through 20 games this season and 68.0 innings pitched, Brown posted an astonishingly low 1.85 ERA. More importantly, opposing hitters were no longer able to sit on his fastball, as the addition of a sinking pitch forced them to account for another offering with significant movement while still respecting his devastating curveball.

Unfortunately, Brown’s breakout season came to a halt in early June when he was diagnosed with stress fractures in his neck, an issue that had plagued him in the past. The prescribed treatment was rest, which Brown followed before gradually progressing back into pitching activities. However, just as he appeared to be nearing a return, Brown began experiencing discomfort again.

According to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, Brown sought multiple medical opinions after the neck pain returned. Ultimately, doctors determined that his neck had not healed enough to safely continue pushing through the discomfort, bringing an end to his 2026 season and preventing him from pitching for the Cubs again this year.

For Brown, injury ending his 2026 season is undoubtedly a disappointing way to close out what had been a breakout campaign. Hopefully he can return at full strength in 2027, and keep the pain away, where he will look to build on the momentum of his impressive start from this season.
