Chicago Bears CB punished by NFL for nasty hit of Vikings RB

The NFL made a statement earlier this week by handing out fines to several league players for celebrations. On Saturday, the league fined a Chicago Bears player for a nasty hit on Minnesota Vikings running back Aaron Jones.

The Bears lost 9-3 to the Vikings in a defensive game during wet and slippery conditions at Soldier Field in Week 2. Chicago cornerback Tyrique Stevenson made a hard hit on Jones that knocked the running back’s helmet off. No flag was thrown on the play.

However, the league reviewed the play and determined Stevenson needed to be punished for using his helmet as he collided with Jones.

Per Tom Pelissero of Netflix, Stevenson was fined $22,342 for the hit.

“The NFL fined Bears CB Tyrique Stevenson $22,342 for unnecessary roughness (use of the helmet) — the hit that knocked off Vikings RB Aaron Jones’ helmet last week,” Pelissero posted on X. “No flag was thrown.”

Stevenson was listed as a non-participant for Thursday’s practice due to a hamstring issue. Bears head coach Ben Johnson said early this week the cornerback was week-to-week with the injury.

On Saturday, he was listed as a full participant at practice and is expected to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football” in Week 3.

Given that quarterback Caleb Williams was ruled out against the Eagles due to a hamstring strain and the status of backup quarterback Tyson Bagent is still up in the air due to a concussion, the Bears will need their defense to make a few stops to give their offense a chance on Monday night.

Stevenson will need to bring his toughness, though he must play smarter. Leading with the helmet could have cost the Bears yards against the Vikings on Sunday. Instead, the league hit him in the wallet. Expect Stevenson to play with an edge against the Eagles on Monday night.
