Bears star Colston Loveland’s honest take on early season disappearance

All offseason, the NFL world was forewarned of an inevitable breakout from Chicago Bears tight end Colston Loveland. Through the first two weeks of the season, those predictions haven’t come fruition.

Thus far, Loveland has made one catch for three yards. He was held out of the box score completely in Week 1. The tight end is still waiting to make any form of impact in the passing game, let alone breakout.

Even with Loveland’s quiet start, the Bears certainly haven’t forgotten what he brings to the offense. with quarterback Caleb Williams injured, the franchise may need to rely on his playmaking ability more often than not.

Loveland is up for the task and ready to put on a show. But he also understands all the little pieces that must be in place for Chicago to sing.

‘No block, no rock,’ has become a key mantra for the Bears’ pass catchers. They know they must put in the dirty work to get plays dialed up for them. Loveland is no different. Even if he isn’t blowing up the box score, he can still play a significant role in Chicago’s blocking schemes, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.

“Everyone in here wants the ball,” Loveland said. “We’re here for a reason, and we want to make plays and help our team win. But there’s other ways to make plays on the ground in the run game. I’m just doing what I’m asked. There’s going to be opportunities, so I’ve just got to take full advantage when it arises.”

For all his work as a blocker, Loveland offers the Bears a playmaker not many other franchises can replicate. As a a rookie, he led Chicago with 58 catches for 713 yards and six touchdowns. Chicago is looking for him to return to his receiving heights.

Loveland had a slow start to his rookie season as well. Bouncing back in a hurry, especially in an offense run by head coach Ben Johnson, wouldn’t be the most shocking outcome.
