The Chicago Cubs are searching far and wide for pitching help, and while they’ve already acquired David Peterson from the New York Mets, they are obviously looking for more upgrades between now and the MLB trade deadline.
One name that has consistently surfaced as a possibility for the Cubs is Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta, who seems all but guaranteed to be dealt by Aug. 3.
But would it be worth it for Chicago to add Peralta?
The 30-year-old owns a 4.68 ERA in New York this season, and he is slated to hit free agency at year’s end. There is a pretty good chance that Peralta would be a two-month rental, and the Cubs surely wouldn’t want to gut what’s left of their farm system for a pedestrian pitcher who can simply walk over the winter.
On that note, Chicago just received some an update on the Peralta trade front courtesy of a piece by Will Sammon of The Athletic.

Sammon does seem to believe that a Peralta trade is all but inevitable in the coming weeks, and while the two-time All-Star has struggled in 2026, Sammon does not think that will stop the Mets from landing a decent return for him.
“Multiple scouts and executives who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak freely on the topic said the Mets should end up doing fine on a return for Peralta. It’s unlikely they’ll score the equivalent of what they shipped to the Milwaukee Brewers over the winter for Peralta: pitcher Brandon Sproat and infielder Jett Williams, two top-100 prospects. But they should do OK,” Sammon wrote.
The fact that New York won’t be reaping a haul for Peralta is not surprising based on the way he has pitched this season as well as his impending free-agent status. But the Mets could still land a nice package, which is bad news for the Cubs.
Let’s remember that Chicago has already jettisoned a couple of key pieces of its farm system in recent years, sending Cam Smith to the Houston Astros in the Kyle Tucker trade two offseasons ago and then shipping Owen Caissie to the Miami Marlins for Edward Cabrera this past winter.
Names like Moises Ballesteros, Kevin Alcantara, Pedro Ramirez, Jefferson Rojas, Josiah Hartshorn and Jaxon Wiggins are still in the mix, but would the Cubs surrender any of them for Peralta? It’s certainly debatable.
