White Sox reportedly scouting 2x All-Star on Mets trade block

As the 2026 trade deadline approaches, rumors have indicated that the Chicago White Sox are targeting controllable pitchers to improve their staff. In the starting rotation, finding someone to take the No.2 spot after Davis Martin should be a priority. A few players that fit that mold include Logan Webb of the San Francisco Giants, Reid Detmers of the Los Angeles Angels, and Michael Wacha of the Kansas City Royals.

Despite this, Bob Nightengale’s latest reporting from his Sunday Notebook indicates that Chicago has sent a scout to evaluate Clay Holmes of the New York Mets. Holmes, who owns a $12 million player option for the 2027 season, is currently on injury-rehab assignment after breaking his fibula on May 15.

The New York Mets, who have been one of baseball’s biggest disappointments this year, have made it known that several of their players are available for trade. Holmes is included in this group and could be exactly the player Chicago is looking for as the 33 year old would provide a significant boost in the rotation without an extremely high cost.

Before landing on the injured list, Holmes posted a stellar 2.39 ERA across his first nine starts of the season. He also proved his durability in 2025, his first full year as a starter, making 31 starts while recording a 3.53 ERA. One factor working in the White Sox’s favor, should they acquire him, is that his current injury is unrelated to his throwing shoulder. Combined with his relatively light workload this season, Holmes could return well-rested and fresh for the stretch run as Chicago pursues its first postseason appearance since 2021.

Furthermore, if Holmes were to exercise his $12 million player option for 2027, it would represent a relatively modest financial commitment. Based on the White Sox’s current payroll, that salary would rank behind only Munetaka Murakami and Anthony Benintendi. With the rest of the roster built around young, cost-controlled talent, retaining Holmes at that price appears to be a realistic and affordable option for Chicago.
