NFL: Chicago Bears Training Camp

One of the biggest question marks for the Chicago Bears this upcoming season is the pass rush. After they had a need to improve the pass rush this offseason, the Bears decided to stay put and not add a player to the position.

It’s a unit that struggled last season and now this year, they will rely on what they have to get it done.

On Wednesday, Ryan Poles was asked about the pass rush and what they could do to improve it. He left the door open for a possible move but he believes the Bears will have to address that when the time comes.

“We’ve got to make sure we know our team,” Poles said Tuesday. “So, we evaluate on a daily basis and see what we need to do. “We can cross that bridge if we ever need to go across it.”

There are a few free agents out there that could be of service to the Bears, headlined by Jadeveon Clowney, Brandon Graham and Joey Bosa. However, if a move comes, it likely won’t be any time soon.

During the offseason, Ben Johnson mentioned better coaching as a way it could improve.  Now, in his first presser of training camp, Dennis Allen is pointing to mechanics as a way they can solve things. However, they will have to wait for the pads to come on to get a full evaluation.

Yeah, look, mechanics. You know, we’re looking for pass rush mechanics. It’s hard to really – listen, it’s hard to evaluate a lot of stuff, alright, when you’re practicing in underwear. So, we’ll be able to have a better feel of what we got in the run game, what we have in the passing game, when we start putting on the pads.

In addition to the mechanics, Allen believes fixing the pass defense will help too. He sees a correlation between the pass rush and secondary as a way to improve his defense.

“There’s a lot been made of the pass rush, right?” Allen said on Wednesday. “There’s no example of team defense that it’s better exemplified than in pass defense. Because I don’t care how good your pass rush is, if [defensive backs] don’t cause the quarterback to have to reset or get to his second or third read you’re not getting to him. And I don’t care how good your coverage is, if you can’t get to the quarterback and disrupt him they’re going to throw completions. So, I think we’ve got to get better at pass defense, all right? And I think that’s both elements working together. And so I think that’s what our focus is.”

The Bears are going to have to rely on Montez Sweat, Austin Booker and Dayo Odeyingbo to get it done. But the future of the position is still something in the spotlight.
