Chicago Bears lineman calls for immediate change after Week 2 disaster

Fixing the offensive line was a key prerogative for the Chicago Bears upon head coach Ben Johnson’s arrival. For all the fireworks, Chicago’s offense can’t operate at max capacity without a strong foundation in the trenches.
In their Week 2 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears’ offensive line didn’t live up to the hype. Chicago couldn’t get their ground game up to their usual standards, as evident by D’Andre Swift averaging 2.8 yards over his 16 carries. But perhaps even more damning were Chicago’s penalties.
The Bears were called for eight flags overall, losing 58 yards. Numerous drives stalled out due to penalties. One in particular saw the offense take the ball deep inside Minnesota territory before being forced to punt. In a one-score game, those miscues played a significant role in the Bears’ loss.
At the very least, Chicago is aware of the problems. Right guard Jonah Jackson is committed to fixing them completely.
Chicago Bears must make changes quickly
It is no longer training camp. The NFL season is in full swing and every snap count. Chicago doesn’t have time to truly tinker around and try different options. The Bears must figure out things on the fly.
That goes for everyone across the offensive line. Jackson in particular has been mightily impressed in 2026, as his 91 grade from Pro Football Focus ranks second/69 guards. But the guard knows that the Bears must compete as one. Everyone involved must be ready to put in the work and improve, via Dan Wiederer of the Athletic.
“We always ask ourselves, ‘Was it us or them?’ And that was an ‘us’ situation,” Jackson said. “That’s something we have to fix.”
“We have to fix it fast,” he continued. “Because the NFL doesn’t wait for anybody. The season doesn’t wait for anybody. They don’t care if mistakes happen above the neck and it’s all on us.”
Facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3, the Bears will have an immediate opportunity to prove their worth. If Chicago can hold their own, and limit the penalties, the concerns from Week 2 will begin to dissipate.
But if play remains sloppy, personnel changes may be necessary.
